RECOVERY

‘How’s it going, gang?’ Mike asked as he joined them in the rear of the camper van.

‘As good as it can be, I suppose,’ said Trevor. ‘Andy’s just flying over the target area now so we can check for any surprises. So far, there’s nothing that concerns us too much.’

‘I wouldn’t speak too soon if I were you,’ Andy said. ‘Take a look at this.’

Trevor and Mike closed in as Kendra and Amir stepped back to give them room in the tight space.

‘See here? It’s faint, but there is a CCTV camera covering the rear exits, shops and flats alike, three of them. Additionally, I spotted at least one more here,’ he said, tapping the monitor in one corner. ‘The takeaway has built an extension of sorts in the yard, probably to store their foodstuff. If you look at the corner here, you can see another camera, which pretty much covers the whole yard. Amir is going to have problems getting in and doing his thing.’

The yard was tight and could fit two or three vehicles at most. At this time there was only one, a dark saloon of indeterminate make. The space for vehicles was an L-shape, due to the takeaway’s extension in one corner that ran the length of the yard and the width of the shop. In the opposite corner was another square, shed-like wooden structure, twice as wide as the takeaway’s but half as long, allowing room for a vehicle to come into what was a paved courtyard suitable for two; three, if you were to block the entrance. There was also a tree and a large bush against the wall between the two structures. Amir took it all in and nodded, happy with what he’d seen.

‘Don’t worry about me,’ he said confidently, ‘now that I’ve seen the layout of the yard, I don’t need to go in it via the access road. I’ll go around it and climb. The cameras won’t pick me up.’

‘You can do that?’ Mike asked, never having seen Amir’s parkour skills.

‘If only you knew what this guy can do, you’d wanna pay me a transfer fee so you can add him to your crew,’ Trevor laughed, ‘and it would be a world-record fee, I assure you.’

‘Ah, that’s good of you to say, Trev,’ Amir said, offering Kendra’s dad a fist to touch. Trevor ignored it.

‘Don’t get ahead of yourself, young man. You have a job to do, remember?’

‘Received and misunderstood, sir, yes sir,’ Amir replied enthusiastically, in his usual exaggerated manner. He gave a mock salute and left the camper van, carrying the kit that would make the team’s job easier.

‘You may as well bring Mabel back,’ Kendra told Andy. ‘Now that we’ve seen the cameras, best leave Amir to it.’

‘Mabel?’ Mike said.

‘Don’t ask,’ Trevor replied, shaking his head.
